| 963 | Nila Sue Fort Koenig - Posted September 08, 2003 Manson Nila Koenig, the unofficial "welcome wagon" of the Manson community, died Thursday, September 4, 2003 at her home. A remarkable percentage of new Manson residents were recipients of her greetings and friendships accompanied by berries, garden or orchard produce and/or invitations to join her in some activity. An example: following the death of her husband, Arnold Koenig in 1994, Nila called a few friends to join her for lunch at a local restaurant. The group quickly became the popular "Biddy Bunch" and continues to meet monthly. She was proud of the "no dues, no officers, no agenda, no host, open to anyone" format. Nila had a multitude of interests in the Manson Community. She was a founding member of the Manson Growers Co-op and with her family operated apple orchards in Manson since 1949. She was a member of Manson Grange for 54 years and a major figure in the production of the weekly dinners for Kiwanis and occasionally other special groups. She served as a secretary of the weekly farmers market during the beginning years. As a member of the Chelan Valley Literacy Council, Nila taught ESL classes, and most recently served as treasurer. She was involved with the Manson Library Board, the Manson Park Board, The Manson Education Fund, and worked to support Habitat for Humanity. Nila organized the first directory of the Chelan St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church congregation in 1995 and subsequent publication. Nila was born in Wenatchee on December 2, 1922, to Opal and Harold Fort of Manson. She attended Manson Elementary and High School, then Washington State College, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree and became a registered Nurse after training at the Deaconess Hospital in Spokane. She was a member of the Army Nursing Corps. While employed at the Wenatchee Valley Clinic, she met and married Arnold Koenig in 1948. They moved to Manson, purchased an orchard, and raised a family of four children who survive them: Jim Koenig of Manson; Dr. Joe Koenig of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Dr. Tom Koenig of Snohomish; Cathy Chevalier of Escanaba, Michigan. Also surviving are: grandchildren Emily, Katie, and Anna of Manson; Eric of Snohomish; Jessie of Tulsa, OK; Willie of Oklahoma City, OK and Lane of Norman, OK. Surviving sisters are Helen England and Alice Killian of Manson; Barbara Hisel of Moscow, ID; and Corinne Cockburn of Carefree, AZ.
