    Notes
    • Karen Rebecca Bump, 74, of Athens, Ohio, passed away November 7, 2015 at Brookdale of Marietta after an extended illness. Karen was born December 27, 1940 in Syracuse, New York to Richard and Thora (Olson) Atkins of Athens, Ohio. The family moved back to Athens shortly after Karen's birth. In 1951, Karen's mother remarried and the family moved to Liberia West Africa where her stepfather, Richard Marstiller, was a manager for Firestone Rubber. Karen lived in Liberia until returning to Athens to finish High School.

In 1959, Karen met her college sweetheart and future husband, Duane Bump, while both were attending Ohio University. The couple married at Galbreath Chapel in 1962. Duane and Karen made Athens their lifelong home raising two children, Michael and Michelle.

Karen was employed by Ohio University for over 30 years, 17 of which she served as the Director of Patient Relations for the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine before retiring in 1995. While at OU-COM Karen developed the college's senior volunteer program and played a major role in the growth of the Medical Center. Karen cherished her time with Ohio University and especially enjoyed working with the volunteers.

Karen had a lifelong passion for music and, after her retirement, started a project through Rural Action and the Ohio Arts Council to record and preserve old-time traditional music. These efforts led her to becoming a founding member of the local Appalachian folk music band, Home Remedy, where she sang and played the guitar, fiddle and autoharp. Home Remedy produced 3 studio recorded albums and played at various venues throughout the local Appalachian region.

She was an activist and advocate for homeless and neglected animals in Athens County. She worked closely with animal rescue organizations throughout the region.

Karen is survived by her husband of 53 years, Duane Bump; a son, Michael Bump of Athens; a daughter and son in law, Michelle & Damian Morano of Cincinnati; and a grandson, Tyler Bump of Athens.

She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Atkins; mother, Thora Olson; stepfather, Richard Marstiller; grandfather, Thorwald "Thor" Olson; and grandmother, Irene "Oley" Olson.
