    • ATHENS: James C. Sloan, born June 25, 1919 in Marion passed away May 23, 2010 in Athens where he had resided the last three years.
      A graduate of Marion Harding High School, Sloan served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and received 2 bronze battle stars including for the battle of Midway. Shortly after returning to Marion from the war, Sloan was hired as an office assistant at Marion Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was promoted over the years and eventually served as Marion Federal's long time Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board.
      Sloan served a number of years as a Republican member of the Marion County Board of Elections and 25 years as a member of the Marion County Veteran's Service Commission. Sloan belonged to various Veterans' organizations; he was a life member of Bird-McGinnis Post #162 of the American Legion and Marion Amvets and was a member of V.F.W. Post 3313. Sloan was the long time treasurer of the Memorial and Veterans Day Association. Sloan was also a member of the WWII Veteran and Memorial Committee which oversaw the planning and fund raising for the WWII Memorial at Marion Cemetery; Sloan was honored for his efforts with a marble bench at the entrance to the Memorial. Sloan also served for a number of years on the Board of the Marion Cemetery Association.
      Sloan was a member and past treasurer of Sojourner's Lodge 653, F & AM and was active in other Masonic bodies including Marion Chapter 62 Royal Arch Masons; Marion Council 22, Royal & Select Masters; Marion Commandery 36, Knight Templar; Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus; Aladdin Temple Shrine & Reception Unit; and Marion County Shrine Club of which he was a past president.
      Sloan was a 56 year member of the Marion Noon Lion's Club and was a member of the Marion Moose Lodge and a member and past Trustee of Marion Elk's Lodge 32. Sloan was an active member of the Ohio Gun Collector's Association serving a number of years on its Board of Trustees and as its treasurer.
      Sloan served on the Board of Trustees of Marion General Hospital; was a Director of the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce; and was appointed by Governor James Rhodes to the Citizen's Council of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. Sloan was a long time member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and served there in many capacities including as a member of Church Council. Sloan was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his membership in local fishing clubs.
      Sloan was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline; second wife, Juanita; and brothers, John and Walter B. Sloan.
      He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Martha Sloan; granddaughters, Melissa Sloan and Amy Brandenstein and her husband, David; and great granddaughters, Abby and Emma.
      Calling hours will be observed this Friday, May 28, 2010, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors, 347 W. Center Street, Marion; services will be held Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 241 S. Prospect Street, Marion at 10:30 a.m. with additional viewing beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Marion County United Veterans Council.
      In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church.
