- Larry Mervlan Case of Swoope, VA passed away peacefully at his residence on September 28, 2022 surrounded by his family.
Larry was born in Richwood, WV on May 3, 1947. He married the love of his life, Mildred Jane (Rice) Case on October 20, 1966 and they celebrated 56 wonderful years together.
Larry was one of the best. Anyone that knew Larry knew that he was the most loving father a family could ask for and the friend you could always count on. He was an avid outdoorsmen, master carver, artist, taxidermist, card shark and jack-of-all trades. Deer feared him, women loved him, men admired him, children adored him and strangers became fast friends. He loved to tell stories. You could be sure about 50% of every story was true; you just never knew which 50%. He was the teacher of all things to his two daughters, Daphne and Shannon. This included how to shoot a gun, throw a knife, hunt, tie a line, live off the land, play poker, care for animals, tell jokes and most importantly, how to whip up the best southern biscuits and gravy this side of the Mason Dixon Line. He was at peace in the outdoors and spent most of his time there. He never lost his childlike spirit and love for life & learning.
Larry was a member of the local chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America where he served as a National Director and on the Board of Directors.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Mervlan Case and Mary Lou (Postalwait) Case, as well as three brothers, Douglas, Timothy, and Roger Case.
In addition to his wife, Larry leaves behind two daughters, Daphne Case-West and husband Samuel West of Laurelville, OH, and Shannon (Case) Tinsley and husband Christopher of Arbor Hill, VA. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Ceara (Armstrong) Humphries and Caleb Armstrong and wife Kaley. Larry also has three great-granddaughters or “Papaw's Girls” as he called them, Amelia Humphries, Hadley and Avery Armstrong. All his grandbabies brought a smile to his face every time they were around. Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Surviving in addition to his immediate family are a brother, Terry Case of Mount Nebo, WV, three sisters, Sharon (Case) Casto of Craigsville, WV, Shirley (Case) Santomieri of Summersville, WV, and Patricia Case of Grottoes,VA, numerous nieces, nephews and a large extended family, including his lifelong friend and “brother” & godfather to Larry’s children, Terry Lee Darland, of Stafford, VA.
When you think of Larry, celebrate the good memories you have of him. He would tell you “’life is fragile & short and should be lived to the fullest”. He will be missed more than any of these words could express but he will be forever in our hearts. His love, his wisdom and his compassion lives on in each of us he has touched.
His final wishes were to have no official services. The family will be holding a Celebration of Life at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either the Bluefield Project to help cure Frontal Temporal Dementia or the Izaak Walton League of America.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
