He was the former owner of Retailers Supply Company, which was founded by his father-in-law, ML Shoup, and is currently owned and operated by his youngest son, Kevin. He was born at St Edwards Hospital on July 13, 1934, the second child of Dan Burke, Sr. and the former Trouy Kannapell. His college education (BA in History at Bellarmine College, 1958) was interrupted by service in the US Marine Corps (1954-6), where he held the position of Admirals Orderly for the US Navys 6th Fleet (a job he allegedly secured by misrepresenting that he knew how to drive a car).He began dating the former Elizabeth Shoup in 1959. He famously purchased an engagement ring for her one month into the courtship. They were married on New Years Eve, 1960, and spent nearly 49 years together, until Elizabeths unexpected death from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm in December 2009. They were regulars at Tommys Restaurant on the weekends (where they invariably sat in Willas section). Their wedding anniversary was celebrated annually at Kunzs The Dutchman, until it closed. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and older sister, Maryann Tibbetts (wife of Burleigh). He is survived by his five children: Dr. Brian Burke (with his husband, Joaquín), of Portland, OR; Kathleen Burke, of White Rock, BC, Canada; Craig Burke (with his wife, Diane) of Indianapolis; Barbara Burke Fondren, of New Albany (who, with her husband, Glenn, cared for him with amazing devotion as his health began to fail); and Kevin Burke (with his wife, Kelly) of Floyds Knobs. His living siblings are retired Senior Magistrate Judge Dan Burke, Jr and Edie Burke, both of New Albany. He had 10 grandchildren: Kathleens daughters, McKenna and Trucey; Craigs children, Alexia, Lucas, and Isa; Barbaras daughters, Kaitlin (with her husband, Christian) and Kasey; and Kevins children, Connor, Chandler, and Greenley.Pat had a special devotion to his family, which was the center of his life. He was a passionate fan and familiar face in bleachers across the state, cheering on a child or grandchild. He had an instinctive understanding of sports and fundamentals (he was an IU basketball diehard), but he was even better as a coach of Life. He was a very optimistic man who nurtured success, gave wise advice, and led by example. He was generous in every possible sense of the word.In fair weather months, he could often be found playing rounds of golf with his friends at the New Albany Country Club, where he earned the nickname Arnie, presumably for his personality and not his golf game. Pat was also an avid walker, in any weather, until his back and leg gave out. He loved being from New Albany, knowing its people and stories and geography. He gave and received much love from his puppy, Cassin. He was a life-long Catholic (a member of the congregation first at St Marys, where he attended grade school and his mother played the organ, and later at Our Lady of Perpetual Help). He had a fine voice, and loved to sing along to the music of his youth (usually via the old-format WXVW). He had a great sense of humor, and would entertain his children (and then his grandchildren) with a rhyme taught to him by his father:I had a little pigabout this bigWho would root … with his snoot … in the dirtIt didnt look hard, so I tried it in our yardI could do it alright … but it hurt [the last words delivered with his nose pinched shut]Instead of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity or to Community Montessori, the school founded by Pats daughter, Barbara, at www.shiningminds.com.Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Tuesday at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana. His funeral Mass will be 11:00 am Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Albany, Indiana with entombment to follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany.Published on November 27, 2016 in News and Tribune
