- JOHNSVILLE: Reuben Harvey, 89, formerly of Johnsville, died Thursday afternoon, May 18, 2006 in Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Maryland. Born August 22, 1916 near Marysville, in Union County, Ohio, he was the son of Asa and Grace Snederker, both now deceased. His brother John and sister Mary Ann survive. He spent most of his school years at East Liberty School in Logan County and graduated from Edison High School in Morrow County in 1936. His father was a farmer and owned a feed and grain elevator business for 25 years. Reuben grew up on the farm at East Liberty, and began operating his own business, The Johnsville Milling Company in 1937. He retired 36 years later at the age of 60. Reuben married Nellie C. Shafer in 1938. They were blessed with five children: Phyllis McCormick, Shirley Strouse, Richard Harvey, Janice Mast and Maureen Osborn. They had 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Nellie preceded him in death on November 26, 1998 at the age of 88 years and 7 months. She is buried in Shauck Cemetery in Johnsville, Ohio. She has been missed very much by all. Reuben and his son Richard Harvey built two mobile home parks: one at Johnsville and one at Mansfield, Ohio which provided 168 lots in all on 88 acres. The Harveys sold these parks in 1974, but they are still serving the community well. At age 36 Reuben became a new man in Christ Jesus by faith, was quickened by the Holy Spirit, and became a servant for his Master, the Lord Jesus Christ. This relationship brought him much peace and joy. For many years Reuben was very busy in church work as a partner in jail services. He also served at Mansfield Rescue Mission. He spent 11 years in the Chaco of Colonie Fernhiem, No.18 in Paraguay, South America, working with the Indians, Russian Mennonites, and a large settlement of Amish on 10,000 acres of farm and pasture land for cattle. He and his son Richard owned 1200 acres. In 1972 Reuben was instrumental in starting a new settlement of Amish families south of Johnsville. This grew into 14 districts with 250 people and 14 schools. Reubens hobby for five years was writing books. He was a member of the Woodlawn, Ohio Wisler Mennonite Church of Richland County, Ohio. He spent his last eight years in the Mennonite Fellowship Home at Hagerstown, Maryland. He was prepared to leave this world to be with Christ when He called for him to come home with Him. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 20, 2006 from 2-4 pm in Reiff Mennonite Church, Reiff Church Road, Hagerstown, Maryland. Visiting continues with the family on Sunday, May 21 from 5-8 pm in Woodlawn Mennonite Church, State Route 13 north of Shenandoah, where the funeral service will be held Monday at 10 am.
