- JANET LOUISE AIKIN, age 76, of Sidney, Ohio passed away peacefully on May 16, 2016 at home. She was born April 19, 1940, in the Miller Homestead, Pasco, Ohio, the youngest of five children born to Clayton Ray and Beulah Pauline Jackson Mitchell.
Preceding her in death was her husband & forever friend, John, to whom she was married February 10, 1958. They celebrated 57 years of marriage just a few days prior to saying goodbye on March 6, 2015.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Lori (Steve) Holt of Sidney; four grandchildren, Stephanie (Craig) Merickel, Sidney; Andrew Holt, Columbus; Diana (James) Davis, Piqua; Sean Holt, Columbus; and three great-grandchildren, Nolan Scott, Seth Johnathan, and Ross David Merickel. Three siblings also survive; Lois Jean (Robert) Bell, Sebring, Florida; Bob Mitchell, Maplewood; Berniece Aikin, Lake Park, Florida; and a sister-in-law, Marvelene Mitchell. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and close friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, her oldest brother, Dick Mitchell, and infant son, Johnnie Ray Aikin.
A family in Parnambuco, Brazil, also mourns her passing, this family being that of the first exchange student of the Aikin's in 1974, Maria de Albuquerque Braga and her husband, Alexandre; their children, Mariana (Wendell) Alves and their two daughters, Marina and Amanda; Luciana (Major Lonny) Douthit and their son, Alex, Germany; Romero (Larissa) Braga and their daughter, Heloisa.
Janet worked many years at Stolle Corporation and retired from Alcoa Building Products as Payroll Administrator in 2001. Her hobbies were genealogy, gardening, fishing, traveling and crafts, but the love of her life in recent years has been her three great-grandsons, Nolan, Seth, and Ross. She loved her families' histories and felt so honored and so fortunate to have lived to see the beginning of a new generation in her family.
Through diligence and passionate dedication in researching her family history with cousins, she found what had been missing from her life - grandparents. One of these was her 4th great-grandfather, Mark Mitchell, who immigrated from England to the colonies in 1774, fought for our country's freedom in the Revolutionary War, and moved to Tennessee in 1791, the last of which qualified her as a member of First Families of Tennessee. Janet was also a member of the Winthrop Society through direct ancestry to Nicholas Knapp who came to this country in 1630 and settled in what became the New England states.
A sports enthusiast and dedicated fan, her favorite teams were Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Reds, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Although never a Pittsburgh Steeler fan, she was very proud of the proven fact that former Steeler quarterback and current sports commentator, Terry Bradshaw, was her cousin, with Janet's great-grandmother, Susan BAKER Mitchell, and Terry's great-grandmother, Nancy Ann BAKER Rittenberry being sisters.
She was a member of several genealogy societies: White, Warren, and Van Buren Counties in Tennessee and Shelby, Champaign, and Logan Counties in Ohio. She never stopped searching for the next generation waiting to be discovered and will be missed by fellow researchers and cousin/friends Bev Bakos, Freeland, WA; Phyl Henry, Kettering; Dee Mustaine, Phoenix, AZ; Pattie Cochran, Jennings, OK. She will also be missed by her best friend from high school days, they having rediscovered each other in 2008 after 50 years of not knowing where the other one was - Kim (Dodie) Brown, Cypress, CA.
She was a member of Holy Angels Church, where she had been an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist, a volunteer with R.C.I.A., Peter's Pense Library and at church services at Fair Haven, and was a member of the Sacred Heart Altar Rosary Society.
A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, May 20, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, McCartyville, with Fr. John W. Tonkin officiating. Janet's cremains will, together with her husband's, be interred at the foot of their infant son's grave in Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at Sacred Heart Church. Arrangements are in the care of Cromes Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave, Sidney.
