AMHERST — William Clay Mace, 78 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain following a lengthy illness.
He was born January 10, 1932 in Webster Springs, West Virginia where he was raised and lived until joining the United States Navy at age eighteen. Amherst has been his home for the last fifty-two years.
William served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954. While in the Navy, he served aboard the USS Casa Grande. He worked at Fruehauf Co. in Avon Lake prior to it's closing in 1970 and then was employed at the former Wickes Lumber in Lorain for twenty-three years retiring in 1993. He also worked part time as a real estate agent for Robert Taylor Real Estate. He was a member of the Amherst American Legion Post #118. While in high school, he was a member of the 1949 Webster Springs State High School Championship team. His hobbies included watching all sports, hunting, fishing, working with wood, and handyman projects around his home for his family and friends.
Survivors include his sons Roger W. Mace of Amherst, Scott A. Mace and his wife Mary Anne of Amherst, and Brian K. Mace of Elyria; his daughter Kim Tokas and her husband Mark of Amherst; his grandchildren Chelsea Mace, Hillary Mace, Kaylie Mace, Kameron Tokas, Emily and Alex Mace; his sisters Betty Morton of Rockville, Maryland and Alta Vaughn of Whittier, California; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-eight years Wilma Jean Mace (nee: Squires) on October 30, 2003; by his parents Henry Clay and Maude Mace (nee: Rose); by his brothers Kenneth, Willard, Elmer, and Virgil Mace; and by his sisters Rosemary Mace Phares Ralston, Ruth Marsh, and Pat Sheldon.
Friends may call Sunday, June 20, 2010, from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 21, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. Terrance Adamson, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Amherst, will officiate. The Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will perform military honors. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to American Cancer Society, North Regional Office; 10501 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106.
