- Charles W. Utt, 89, of the Stealey and Sardis areas of Clarksburg, departed this life on Wednesday, June 26, 2013. He was born on January 9, 1924 in Uniontown, PA; the son of the late Nellie and Frank Utt.
He is survived by 5 children, Anne R. Miller wife of the late Charles L. Miller; Charles David Utt and wife Janet of Jane Lew; Ramona L. Knapp and husband Thomas of Clarksburg; Tammy G. Swaim and husband Jeffery of Clarksburg; and Candace M. Fontaine and husband Scott R. Fontaine of Clarksburg; eight grandchildren, Kyle Swaim, Heather Jack, Shawn Jack, Michelle Lowenthal, Christopher Utt, Sunni Bowser, Alexis Hall, and Amber Starkey; five step-grandchildren, Amber Benincosa, Timothy L. Watson II, Joshua Watson, Brandon Fontaine, Jared Fontaine; one great-grandson, Brayden Edward Charles Bowser; one aunt, Della Hosey and special friends, Timothy L. Watson, Donnie Phillips ,Butch and Iris Wickenhofer, Jim Jack, and Melvin Williams.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Jo Frum Utt, his first wife Marjorie L. Allman Utt, one aunt; Ella Broslawsky; four uncles; Albert Hosey; Clyde Hosey; Charlie Hosey and Bill Hosey, one infant daughter and family friend Kevin Beerbower.
In addition to his family great care was provided by compassionate caregivers.
Charles attended Washington Irving High School. He was employed with various companies as a welder and mechanic, the last being King Knob Coal Company and was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He enlisted and proudly served as a Signalman Second Class in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 starting with the United States Naval Training Service in Great Lakes, IL, SCTC Miami, FL., NTS Norfolk, VA., the USS Melvin Nawman, and he served in the Pacific on the Destroyer Escort ISS Sloat. He was a member of the Harrison County VFW Post 573 and American Legion Post 13. He was also a master mason with a 51 year membership in Herman Lodge #6 A.F. & A.M. and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
He enjoyed traveling, reading, spending time with his children and grandchildren, hunting, fishing, tinkering on cars and equipment, NASCAR, and family gatherings that included good food and good conversation. He enjoyed music and dancing. He attended car shows and had owned Hudson Hornets and a Hudson Terraplane.
Family and friends will be received at the Davis Funeral Home, 124 Olen Thomas Drive, Rt 98, Clarksburg, from 2-8PM Friday, where services will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 11:00AM; Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Full military graveside rites will be accorded by the Harrison County Honor Guard and the Navy Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Harrison County VFW Post # 573, 2616 Bennetts Run Road, Lumberport WV 26386.
