    • Alfred C. "Alfie" Blumenschein, age 94, a lifelong resident of Darby Township died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at The Gables at Green Pastures where he had been a resident for the past four months. He previously made his home with his son in recent years.

      A retired dairy farmer, Alfred was a faithful lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was baptized on April 28, 1916, and confirmed on April 13, 1930. He served as a mechanic in the US Army during World War II having attained the rank of sergeant and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 bronze stars, and the WWII Victory Medal. Alfred enjoyed vegetable gardening and will be remembered as a sweet gentleman who possessed a terrific sense of humor.

      Alfred was born April 25, 1916, in Marysville to the late Lewis and Margaret Nicol Blumenschein. He married Clara Kleiber on February 5, 1946, and she preceded him in death on January 26, 1987. He married Gertrude Boerger Stierhoff on November 7, 1992, and she preceded him in death on December 11, 2004. He was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Otto, Harry, & William Blumenschein, 2 sisters, Frieda & Christine Blumenschein, 3 sisters-in-law, Martha Blumenschein, Ruth Blumenschein, and Martha Blumenschein, and a step-grandson, Doug Kiss.

      Suvivors include two sons, Dennis (Mary Lou) Blumenschein, Marysville; and Jerry (Lea) Blumenschein, Arizona; his daughter, Sandy Leis, Kenton; 2 grandsons, Andrew (Katie) Blumenschein and Daniel (Aimee) Blumenschein; 5 special great-grandchildren, Olivia, Adam, Grace, Alex, & Evan; 2 brothers; Herman Blumenschein, Marysville; and Roy Blumenschein, Plain City; step-children, Fred (Mary) Stierhoff, Marysville; and Vivian (John) Kiss, California; step-grandchildren, Angie (Steve) Rausch, Julie (Rod) Cardell, Brian (Lynn) Stierhoff, and Wendy (Doug) Kiss; several step-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

      Burial with military honors conducted by the Union County Honor Guard will take place at the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery.
