- Harland J. "Smitty" Smith, 81, of Crooked Lake died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at Cameron Hospital in Angola. He was born in Chicago, Ill., on Jan. 4, 1930, to Fred A. and Camella (Kreyder) Smith. Smitty was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He received the Korean Service Medal with five bronze battle stars. He was a retired truck driver for Superior Tea/Coffee. He has driven trucks for a number of different companies since 1946. He attended Hudson United Brethren Church in Hudson. He was a member of Truck Drivers, Oil Drivers, Filling Station and Platform Workers Union Local 705, VFW of Angola and Angola American Legion Post 0777. He married Janet Houser on July 5, 1952, in Auburn and she survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Christina L. (Bill) Rotenberry of Bartlett, Ill., and Nancy J. (Richard) Kent of Angola; five grandchildren, Katrina Rotenberry, Jeffrey (Laura) Rotenberry, Christopher T. Kent, Curtis R. Kent, and James E. Kent; a great-graddaughter, Ayna Rotenberry; a sister, Donna Harris of Fort Wayne; and many nieces and nephews including Bruce Smith of Palos Heights, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Claude Smith and Robert Smith. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at Hudson United Brethren Church in Hudson with the Rev. Craig Burkholder officiating. Burial in Christian Union Cemetery, Garrett. Visitation is Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 S. Center St., Auburn, and also one hour prior to the service at the church Friday from 10-11. Preferred memorials can be directed to Cameron Hospice.
