    Notes
    • Lorena G. Benham of Springdale, passed away at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville.

She was born to George and Stella Nash First. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

A survivor of the Great Depression in a small town in Oklahoma, Lorena was adopted at age 2 by Anna Quint. A graduate of Shidler High School, she played clarinet in the high school marching band. A career girl in her early 20s, Lorena served her country during World War II as a Rosie the Riveter, building fighter planes and bombers for the war effort at the McDonald Douglas Airplane plant in Oklahoma City. After the war she stayed in the big city and worked as a dental assistant. Married to Bill Benham in 1942, her career was interrupted in 1954 by the birth of her first child. Four more children followed and Lorena stayed home, focusing on raising and having fun with her daughters.

The wife of a minister of music in several Southern Baptist churches in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, Lorena was deeply faithful and active in those churches, helping her husband build congregations and often their buildings. She went back to work once all her girls were in school, for Sam Walton in his first retail chain, Ben Franklin stores. Later she worked at Wilson's Department Store in downtown Springdale, then as manager of the jewelry department in Montgomery Wards. Always proud of her country, Lorena continued her interest in and knowledge of The Great War throughout her life. Proud, too, of her Okie roots, Lorena could list all the celebrities who were born and raised, like her, in Oklahoma. She was a loving and devoted mother, kind to everyone who crossed her path, with an earthy sense of humor that often created laughter during difficult times.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Bill Benham, in 2003; her infant son, Michael, in 1956; and daughter, Lori Ann, in 1973.

Survivors include a brother, Pat King of Cottonwood, Arizona; three daughters, Sandy Graue and husband Doug of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Candy Black and husband Cliff of Springdale and Marcy Benham and fiancé Richard Davies of Fayetteville; four grandchildren, Ms. Chris Graue, Nick Black and wife Christy, Ashley Stewart and husband Jesse, and Hunter Black, plus six great-grandchildren.
